Amnesty International UK Campaign
International Day of the Disappeared
Figures from the UN suggest that four people are subject to enforced disappearance every day, often by the state or with their full knowledge. Many of these ‘disappeared’ face torture and death, yet the UK Government is one of only two western European states that have not signed a treaty to protect people from enforced disappearance.
The piece was commissioned by Amnesty International to campaign for awareness on this topic.
Money does not have an absolute value, but one that is completely dependent on status, class, attitude and condition at one given time.
You are drawn to this shiny coin, through its holes you can see what you are purchasing while on the other side you become aware of your reflected image: a reminder of the value you attribute.
The Royal Mint supported me whilst at the Royal College of Art London to produce these bespoke £5 coins.
I created a number of sculptures featuring people that are dressed but with no bodies. These pieces were exhibited on the road in London and paraded right in front of Westminster.
